Arba’a Rukun was a small medieval mosque before being expanded by Turkish promoters. The mosque was built in 1269. A sculpted wood bandeau adorned the mosque door with a floral motif with an inscription in Arabic in the memoir of Khusrau ibn Muhammad al-Shirazi. The mosque was luxurious, decorated with marble and gold in the medieval time. It also has architectural similarities with the palace of Husuni Kubwa in Kilwa.
